VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Indo-American Heritage Museum's dynamic, dedicated and diverse group of volunteers are proving how a small group of people can bring about change that influences generations. Come join us and enjoy an engaging, rewarding, educational  experience. Younger volunteers will find working at IAHM a great way to build their resumes. Whether you are a student, a senior citizen or somewhere in between, you can work with us to fulfill IAHM's mission. Here are some of the ways you can help:

Ethnic Dialogue

Participants: Your experience coming to America or growing up in an immigrant family offers IAHM visitors fascinating insights into Indian American life. Our Ethnic Dialogue sessions are our one of our oldest and most popular programs and work to promote greater appreciation and understanding of the diverse cultures of the community. These sessions are scheduled as requests are received. If you enjoy exchanging views, discussing issues and sharing your heritage with visiting groups, and would like a flexible volunteering schedule, sign up for an enjoyable, rewarding experience as an Ethnic Dialogue participant and we will add your name to the volunteer pool.

Developing Additional Virtual Galleries

Interested in researching the Indian American story? IAHM seeks two enthusiastic volunteers to assist in developing virtual galleries on our website. IAHM currently hosts its major educational exhibits virtually and continues to expand its galleries.  In 2011 we are planning to launch virtual galleries on earning the right to citizenship and on the role of Indian dance in America.

Qualified researchers will guide and mentor two volunteers who will conduct extensive literature reviews and research utilizing primary and secondary sources. If you have an interest in historical records or in interviewing individuals to document a new found history here is the place to put it to use.  Dedicated and knowledgeable board members and existing IAHM volunteers will guide and support gallery development.

Ethnic Dialogue

Curriculum Development and Training: IAHM is looking for two volunteers to help us establish a formal curriculum for our Ethnic Dialogue program and to train new volunteer participants.  The program typically consists of short presentations and discussion, followed by a tour of the Indian business district on Devon Avenue, which serves as our “living museum.”  Indian Americans telling their own stories engage visitors in learning about the Indian-American immigration experience and its history and the adaptations made by immigrants to traditional cultural practices.

Ethnic Dialogue volunteer trainers will meet with Program Committee members, attend Ethnic Dialogue sessions, synthesize existing materials and build on IAHM’s historical experience to develop a curriculum for future programming and training of new volunteers.  We will need different modules for the varying age groups, interests and ethnic backgrounds of visitors/participants. The volunteer trainers will collaborate on developing the final product, preferably within 3 months. Trainers will recruit, train and retain additional volunteers who will expand the museum’s ability to offer Ethnic Dialogue programming to the public.  The volunteer trainers will also assist in the coordination and tracking of these sessions for IAHM’s archives, documentation and evaluation.

ORAL HISTORY

Join us in our effort to identify and interview early immigrants from India and document their stories while we still have the opportunity to learn of their experiences first hand. Before their voices are lost to us, IAHM seeks to record their histories so later generations can better understand the events and issues that have shaped the lives of Americans from India. We are looking for volunteers across the country to interview and record these stories which will be made available on our website.
